United's Under-Twenty-one side visited Throstle Nest for an evening kick-off against local side Farsley Celtic of the Evo-Stik Division One on Wednesday 27th July 2016. Leeds lined up: (In 4-3-3 formation): Bailey Peacock-Farrell; Alex Purver, Alex Wollerton, Tom Pearce, Callum Nicell; Bobby Kamwa, Samuel Amissah, Clark Odour; Eoghan Stokes, Malik Wilks, Michael Taylor. Substitutes Jamie Shackleton, and two trialists (neither of which were Conor Shaughnessy or Gabriele Perico.) While Farsley Celtic started with: Graham McKibbin; Aaron Hardy, Chris Howarth, Peter Davidson, Paddy Miller; Nathan Turner, Jordan Deacey, Richard Marshall; James Walshaw, Aiden Savory, Paul Walker. Substitutes: Jake Lofthouse, James Knowles, Ross Daly, Kyle Harrison. The home team started well and it was they that took the lead after seven minutes. Jordan Deacey latched onto a defensive mistake between the Bailey Peacock-Farrell, the Leeds keeper, and one of his defenders, and slotted the ball into the net to give the Celts the lead. Their early success and their continued possession gave the Farsley side more confidence and after some good combination play Aiden Savoury was given a good shooting chance in the eleventh minutes, but his shot was wide. Farsley dominated lay for a good fifteen minutes before Leeds had their first real attempt on goal, but the long-range effort from Clark Odour went well over without troubling Graham McKibbin the Farsley goalkeeper. After nineteen minutes, Aiden Savoury showed good control as he created a chance for James Walshaw, however, Bailey Peacock-Farrell showed good anticipation as he was quick off his line to block his shot. They home side continued to play good football and after twenty-five minutes they nearly doubled their lead when there was hesitation in the Leeds defence from a Jordan Deacey’s corner, but luckily for Leeds no Farsley player was able to get a touch to the cross. After thirty-three minutes the home side made their first changes as James Knowles came on for Peter Davidson, while Ross Daly replaced Richard Marshall. Leeds then had a good five minutes spell which saw Graeme McKibbin in action twice making good saves from Clark Odour, one of which came from a corner. But the home side soon regained the ascendency and took charge of the game until the half-time break. They created two good chances in the final minutes of the half, when, with two minutes left on the clock Ross Daly was played in on the right but Bailey Peacock-Farrell saved with ease. Then just before the half-time whistle from a corner, Paddy Miller headed over. After the restart Farsley continued to have the better of possession and after fifty-three minutes the ball was played to James Walshaw after a corner, but his shot went wide. After fifty-three minutes Farsley made two changes with Richard Marshall returning to replace James Wilshaw and Peter Davison also returned in place of Nathan Turner. Farsley Celtic's ascendency continued after the substitutions and four minutes later and good work by Jordan Deacy gave Aiden Savoury a chance to get in a header but he failed to find the net. Leeds did have their moments when the retained possession and created chances, but they were mostly reduced to long range efforts with no real chance of success. But on the hour Tom Pearce did try his luck but with no grater success than his compatriots. In the sixty-sixth minute, Paddy Miller played in Aiden Savoury with a good pass, but the Leeds defence were able to crowd him out when he was confronted by greater numbers. On seventy-five minutes James Wilshaw returned in place of Aiden Savoury. This was quickly followed by Nathan Turner returning in place of Jordan Deacey. At about that time Malik Wilks came close to equalizing for Leeds but Graham McKibben in the Farsley goal denied him by diving low to his right, to ensure Farsley maintained their lead. The final quarter of an hour proved to be the quietest of the game and Jake Lofthouse took over in the Farsley goal from Graham McKibben with seven minutes to go. Kyle Harrison remained unused on the Farsley bench. As Farsley deserved their 0-1 win.

Match Report: Farsley Celtic: Paul Hatt

Farsley Celtic 1-0 Leeds United U21s 27th July 2016

The Celts made it four wins from four in pre-season with a dominant display against Leeds United U21s. Farsley got off to a great start on seven minutes, when Jordan Deacey latched onto a defensive mistake between the Leeds keeper and one of his defenders, and slotted home to give the Celts the lead. The early goal gave the home side confidence and they were comfortable in possession which culminated in a good chance on eleven minutes, when after positive interplay, Aiden Savory had a shooting opportunity, which unfortunately was dragged wide. The Celts dominated the opening quarter of an hour, but Leeds had their first effort of the evening just a minute later, although the long-range shot went well over the bar. Farsley though continued to play all the football and on nineteen minutes after great control from Savory, he played in James Walshaw, however the Leeds keeper was quickly out to block the shot. Six minutes later, the Celts nearly had a second goal from Jordan Deacey’s corner, as the Leeds defence hesitated; however, no Farsley player was able to apply the finishing touch required. Farsley made the first of their changes on thirty-three minutes as Peter Davidson and Richard Marshall made way for James Knowles and Ross Daly and the Leeds youngsters had a better five minutes spell as Graeme McKibbin had to make a save and then a good claim from a corner. But it was the Celts who finished the half strongly. First with just two minutes remaining, Daly was put through on the right, but his shot was saved by the Leeds keeper. Then on the stroke of half-time, from a Celts corner, Paddy Miller headed just over. The positive display from Farsley continued into the second period and within eight minutes of the restart, from a corner, worked the ball to Walshaw, who shot wide. That was the last action for the Celts number nine at that stage of the game as he departed with Nathan Turner, and Davidson and Marshall returned. However, the substitutions didn’t affect the Celts’ rhythm and on fifty-seven minutes, good work by Deacey created a heading opportunity for Savory. Leeds were struggling to create anything and were reduced to long-range efforts such as that from Tom Pearce on the hour mark. Miller then played a lovely through ball for Savory on sixty-six minutes, but as the forward bore down on goal he was crowded out by two Leeds defenders. With fifteen minutes remaining, Savory made way for Walshaw and a minute later Turner returned for Deacey. In between that spate of replacements, McKibbin had to make a save low to his right to maintain Farsley’s lead. The remaining final quarter proved to be the quietest of the game, with the only other action seeing McKibbin replaced by Jake Lofthouse with seven minutes remaining. Another victory for the Celts in pre-season and one in which a second goal would have better reflected their dominance.

Celts: McKibbin (Lofthouse 83), Hardy, Howarth, Turner (Davidson 53), Davidson (Knowles 33), Miller, Deacey (Turner 76), Marshall (Daly 33), Walshaw (Marshall 53), Savory (Walshaw 75), Walker. Unused subs: Harrison.
